"One of Shakespeare's best-loved comedies, Twelfth Night was 'blissfully reborn' (The Daily Telegraph) for the 2012/13 season at London's Globe Theatre, under the direction of Tim Carroll. The hilarious tale of misdirection and deception is performed here by an all-male cast, as it would have been in Shakespeare's day, with Mark Rylance playing Olivia and Roger Lloyd Pack as the hapless Sir Andrew Aguecheek. The production also marks Stephen Fry's triumphant return to the stage as the pompous Malvolio, ridiculous in his yellow stockings. . . . Spoken in Shakespeare's English with English and German subtitles. An all-male Original Practices production."--amazon.co.uk

Twelfth Night (ATV British television production) (1969)

"Sir Alec Guinness, Sir Ralph Richardson and Joan Plowright star in this merry on-stage mix-up of identity, gender and love in Tony Award-winner John Dexter's production of William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night. Originally broadcast on Britain's ITV, this classic performance captures all the slapstick, puns and double entendres that have amazed and amused audiences for over four hundred years."--product description at amazon.com

BOOKS

The text of the play can be read online for free at http://shakespeare.mit.edu/twelfth_night/full.html .

I like to read the play in a paperback edition with footnotes that I can look at for explanation of any vocabulary that is not clear to me. My favorite paperback edition of Twelfth Night is the one from the Arden Shakespeare series. I like the quality of the paper, the size of the typeface, and the quality of the Introduction and the footnotes. Its one disadvantage is that it is a little heavy for a paperback if I want to carry it around, as I might if I were going to read it on a commuter train. The paperback from the Folger Shakespeare Library is a very good one, also with good footnotes, with the size and weight of a typical mass-market paperback, and at a more economical price.
